Dr Phil Toonson

General & Hepatopancreaticobiliary Surgeon

Phil is a Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) and General Surgeon, specialised in managing pancreatic cancers, liver disease and gall bladder pathology.

​

He graduated with Honours from the University of Tasmania in 2005 and completed his surgical training in Tasmania and Victoria with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2013. Following this he undertook 2 years of post-fellowship training in Liver, Pancreatic and Biliary Surgery with the Australian and New Zealand HPB (ANZHPB) Association in Singapore and Adelaide.

He is a member of the International HPB Association, ANZHPB Association, and Obesity Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand.

​

Phil is Head of the Upper GastroIntestinal and HPB Surgical Unit at Royal Darwin Hospital, as well as the supervisor of surgical trainees.

​

His general surgical interests include minimally invasive (laparoscopic) procedures such as reflux surgery, hernia repair, cholecystectomy (gall bladder removal), and bowel resection. He also performs most other general surgical procedures, He does not charge an out-of-pocket gap for most procedures.

​

Recently he has begun providing Darwin's only pH monitoring to assess gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.
